A scenic picture of two giraffes taken in the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington. Giraffes are an African ruminant mammal living in open savannas of the Sahara. The giraffe is the tallest of animals and browse in treetops at heights inaccessible to other leaf-eaters. A male can grow up to be 18 ft (5.5 m) from hoof to crown. Giraffes feed chiefly on leaves of acacia and mimosa, using their extensible tongues and mobile lips to secure food. Giraffes can become very vulnerable when spreading their forelegs and lowering their heads to drink; however, they can do without water for long intervals.
